Every year, a large number of candidates appear for the UPSC prelims and mains examinations in the hope of securing prestigious positions like IAS, IPS, and more. For those with a goal to secure a government job with a top position, the UPSC prelims exam is scheduled to be held on May 28. The CSE Prelims Exam is the first of the three screening stages of the UPSC exam. Candidates who score above the cutoff mark in this exam are eligible to attempt the Mains. To help you prepare, here are the syllabus and guidelines for the Prelims examination.

The UPSC Prelims exam syllabus is divided into two parts: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Paper I is the GS paper, and it consists of 100 questions, carrying 2 marks for each correct answer. For every wrong answer, you will lose 0.66 marks (1/3rd of the positive marking), and if you leave a question unattempted, you will receive zero marks. Paper II is the CSAT paper, and it consists of 80 questions, carrying 2.5 marks for each correct answer. For every wrong answer, 0.833 marks will be deducted, and for every question left unattended, you will receive zero marks. It is important to note that the marks obtained in the Prelims exam are not included in the final merit list, and Paper II is a qualifying paper with a minimum qualifying mark fixed at 33%.

The syllabus for Paper I (GS) covers the following topics: Current Affairs (Events) of national and international importance, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World, Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc., Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc., General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change: that do not require subject specialization, and General Science.

The syllabus for Paper II (CSAT) includes the following topics: Intelligibility, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical Skills & Analytical Ability, Decision-making and problem-solving ability, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, order of expansion, etc.) (10th class level), and selection of data (charts, graphs, tables, the sufficiency of data, etc. – 10th class level). With this syllabus in mind, you can start your preparation and ensure success in the UPSC prelims exam.
