Only 5.67% of Schools Provide Continuous Education from Class 1 to 12 in India

Overview of School Registration in India



As per the UDISE+ 2025-26 data, there are 1,466,682 registered schools across India. However, only 83,185 of these institutions offer education from Class 1 through Class 12 within a single establishment.


Limited Options for Continuous Education

The statistics indicate a significant limitation in the availability of schools that provide uninterrupted education from primary to senior secondary levels. Only 5.67% of schools allow students to complete their entire schooling in one institution. This suggests that over 94% of schools require students to transfer to different institutions at various educational stages, which can affect their learning continuity and increase dropout rates.


Improved Transition Rates

Recent government data shows a positive trend in student transition rates across different educational levels. The transition rate from the preparatory stage to middle school improved from 92.2% in 2024-25 to 93.8% in 2025-26. Additionally, the rate for moving from middle school to secondary education rose from 86.6% to 88.3% during the same period.


Retention Rates and Dropout Reduction

The retention rate at the secondary level has also seen an increase, climbing from 47.2% in 2024-25 to 51.9% in 2025-26. Furthermore, the dropout rate at this level decreased from 8.2% to 7.0%, indicating a positive shift in student retention.


School Upgrades Since 2018-19

The Rajya Sabha report highlighted that since 2018-19, 1,617 schools have received approval for upgrades to the senior secondary level. Rajasthan leads with 606 approved upgrades, followed by Odisha with 331 and Punjab with 241. Other states like Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Karnataka also received approvals for several schools, enhancing educational access across various regions.
