Overview of NEET UG 2026 Applications

The NEET UG 2026 has shown a slight uptick in applications, despite high hopes for a notable increase in MBBS seat availability. Let's explore the details further.

This year presents an interesting situation for the thousands of students gearing up for medical entrance exams. Unlike previous years, which typically experienced a significant rise in NEET UG applications, the growth for 2026 has been quite limited. This year, only around 3,000 more students have registered compared to last year. This figure is both unexpected and somewhat comforting—unexpected due to the minimal growth, yet comforting in light of the anticipated increase in MBBS seats.

Admit Card Distribution and Exam Schedule

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has distributed admit cards to 2,279,743 candidates for NEET 2026. A significant point to note is that over 99% of students have received their first-choice examination city, which should help reduce pre-exam stress and travel issues. The exam is set to take place nationwide on May 3rd, in a single shift.

Last Year's Application Statistics

In the previous year, around 22.76 lakh students applied for NEET, while the number of MBBS seats was approximately 1.29 lakh. The competition is fierce, with candidates far outnumbering available seats. However, this year may present a different scenario. Sources from the National Medical Commission (NMC) indicate that several new medical colleges have sought approval to start MBBS programs, and existing institutions have proposed increasing their seat capacity. It is widely anticipated that the upcoming academic year could see a significant rise in the total number of MBBS seats.

Examination Centers and Attendance Expectations

The NTA has kept the examination center arrangements consistent with previous years, establishing a total of 5,446 centers across the nation. During registration, students were asked to select three preferred cities, and centers were assigned based on these choices. Information about the examination cities was made available as early as April 12th, giving students ample time for preparation.

NEET consistently boasts a high attendance rate. Last year, around 97 to 98 percent of registered candidates participated in the exam. This year, with most students assigned to their preferred cities, the attendance rate is expected to increase even further.
