Understanding JEE: Key Differences Between JEE Main and JEE Advanced

Overview of JEE in India

In India, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a crucial annual assessment for students aspiring to enroll in engineering programs. This examination comprises two parts: JEE Main and JEE Advanced, with the latter specifically for admission into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Understanding the distinctions between these two exams is essential for prospective candidates.

JEE Main: Admission to Engineering Colleges

The JEE Main is administered twice each year, with the first session occurring in January and the second in April. Students' performance in this exam determines their eligibility for admission to 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and numerous other government-funded technical institutions, as well as various private and government engineering colleges across India.

Attempts Allowed for JEE Main

Candidates are permitted to attempt the JEE Main exam three times. They can take the exam once during their 12th-grade year and then for two consecutive years thereafter. After three attempts, no further opportunities to take the exam are provided.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced

To qualify for the JEE Advanced exam, students must first take the JEE Main and rank within the top 250,000 candidates. Admission to engineering programs at the 23 IITs is based on the results of this exam. Students are allowed only two attempts for JEE Advanced: once in their 12th grade and once in the following year.

Additional Important Information

Candidates must have completed their 12th grade with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics to be eligible for the JEE. The examination is conducted in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format, with a duration of three hours. The National Testing Agency (NTA) oversees the JEE Main, while a different IIT organizes the JEE Advanced each year.
