Free Laptops for Students in Tamil Nadu


New Delhi: On December 6, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of Tamil Nadu announced a program to distribute free laptops to college students. While unveiling the initiative, he emphasized that these laptops represent an opportunity for students to excel in the world, urging them not to view it merely as a gift to keep.


The initiative, named 'Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil' (The World is in Your Hands), aims to empower students digitally while enhancing their skills.


Focus on Education - CM's Message

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated, 'These laptops are not just gifts; they are a chance to conquer the world. In our vision, this is not an expense but an investment in the education of future generations. We are providing all learning opportunities for you. Study diligently and choose a good path.'


First Phase to Distribute 1 Million Laptops

Out of the total 2 million laptops planned for distribution, 1 million will be handed out in the first phase, with an allocation of ₹2,000 crores for this initiative in the current financial year.


Eligibility for the Scheme

The beneficiaries of this scheme will include students enrolled in government institutions, such as polytechnic colleges and industrial training institutes. Students from various fields, including engineering, arts, sciences, medicine, agriculture, and law, will be eligible.


Selected Brands for Laptop Distribution

Students will receive laptops from brands like Dell, HP, and Acer, equipped with Intel i3/AMD Ryzen 3 processors, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home, BOSS Linux OS, and MS Office 365.


Free AI Subscription Included

The government will also provide students with a six-month free subscription to Perplexity Pro AI. Reflecting on the significance of AI, CM Stalin remarked, 'AI is the second fire given to humanity, and you are provided with laptops to utilize AI effectively.'


He added, 'While artificial intelligence can never replace humans, it can assist in completing tasks more efficiently. Numerous skill-based job opportunities have emerged, and the youth should take advantage of them. They must strive for progress and contribute to collective development.'


Encouragement to Dream Big - CM Stalin

Encouraging students to dream beyond just obtaining a college degree, CM Stalin asked, 'Will you use the laptop to watch movies or play games, or will you leverage it as a launchpad for your career? Regardless of your career path, aim to be at the top of your field.'
