Odisha Police SI Aspirants Demand Urgent Exam Schedule Amid Protests
Protest by SI Aspirants in Bhubaneswar
In Bhubaneswar, a large group of candidates aspiring for the Odisha Police Sub-Inspector (SI) positions protested outside the Odisha Uniformed Services Selection Staff Commission (OUSSSC) office on Wednesday. They demanded the immediate scheduling of the recruitment exam, which has been delayed for almost 18 months. The chairman of the commission later assured the candidates that the exam would take place by October.
The protesters, organized under the banner of Students Against Corruption, staged a symbolic opening of the commission's office. They performed a mock inauguration by naming the office and cutting a black ribbon, claiming that despite the commission being established nearly three months ago, it has not made any progress in the recruitment process.
The candidates expressed frustration over the cancellation of the previous recruitment process by the Odisha Police Recruitment Board (OPRB) due to alleged irregularities. Following this, the government dissolved the board and assigned the responsibility to the newly formed OUSSSC. However, the aspirants noted that the commission has yet to release an exam schedule.
Moreover, they pointed out that three months post-formation, the commission has not launched its official website or provided a timeline for the examination, leaving around 150,000 candidates, many of whom have been preparing for over two years, in a state of uncertainty.
Bibhuti Bhushan Mohapatra, convenor of Students Against Corruption, stated that the symbolic inauguration aimed to highlight the ongoing delays. He remarked, "The government may not have announced the exam date because the office was never inaugurated. We have taken this step today. The government must respond promptly and announce the exam schedule," warning that protests would persist if no decisive actions were taken.
During the demonstration, the aspirants managed to stop the OPCC president to discuss their concerns. He later joined them in talks with the OUSSSC chairman, who confirmed that the recruitment examination would indeed be conducted by October. Following this assurance, the protesters ended their sit-in.
