Immigration New Zealand has announced a new short-term graduate work visa that will enable eligible graduates to work in the country for a period of up to six months. This visa provides open work rights, allowing graduates to seek employment without needing a prior job offer.

Visa Changes for International Students

Effective November 16, 2026, New Zealand will implement this new visa aimed at international students who have completed their studies. This initiative is particularly beneficial for those who do not meet the criteria for the current post-study work visa. Additionally, the eligibility requirements for the existing post-study work visa have been broadened, which may positively impact Indian students.

Details of the 6-Month Work Visa

The new short-term graduate work visa allows eligible graduates to work in New Zealand for a maximum of six months. It grants open work rights, meaning applicants can work for any employer without needing a job offer beforehand. This visa is specifically for graduates who have completed an eligible qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 in New Zealand but do not qualify for the existing post-study work visa.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this new visa, graduates must have completed their qualification through at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand. Note that English language and foundation courses do not count towards this requirement. Additionally, applicants must have at least NZD 5,000 in available funds and meet health and character standards. Applications must be submitted within three months of the expiration of the New Zealand student visa. This visa is valid for six months and can only be issued once.

Updates for Graduate Diploma Holders

New Zealand has also revised the rules for the existing post-study work visa. Starting November 16, students who complete an eligible Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may qualify for a post-study work visa, provided they also possess a bachelor's degree. This degree can be from New Zealand or another country. For instance, a student who has earned a bachelor's degree in India could be eligible for a post-study work visa after completing an eligible Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, assuming they meet other criteria. However, the Graduate Diploma must be completed on a full-time basis in New Zealand.

Duration of the Post-Study Work Visa

Students who complete an eligible Graduate Diploma may receive a post-study work visa for a duration that corresponds to their study period, with a maximum of one year. Those completing an eligible Level 8 Post-Graduate Diploma may receive a one-year post-study work visa, while students finishing an eligible Master's degree could be granted a visa for up to three years, subject to specific conditions.
