Is ₹1.5 Crore Enough for Retirement? Insights from Recent NPS Survey

A recent survey reveals that many individuals believe a retirement corpus of ₹1.5 crore is adequate, reflecting a growing interest in the National Pension System (NPS). While this figure has increased from previous estimates, experts warn it may still be insufficient for true financial security post-retirement. The survey also highlights key motivations for investing in the NPS, such as recent changes to the scheme and tax benefits, while also noting concerns regarding the lock-in period and mandatory annuity purchases. Discover more about the implications of these findings for your retirement planning.

Growing Interest in the National Pension System

The National Pension System (NPS) is witnessing a surge in interest among individuals. However, many are still uncertain about their retirement savings goals. A pertinent question arises: Is accumulating ₹1.5 crore sufficient for a comfortable retirement?

Individuals typically save to sustain their lifestyle after retirement, aiming to avoid any compromises. But does a corpus of ₹1.5 crore meet this need? A recent survey provides insights into this issue.

Survey Findings on Retirement Corpus

The HDFC Pension Fund Management's ‘NPS Preference Index 2026’ survey indicates that many people now view a retirement fund of around ₹1.5 crore as adequate. This marks an increase from the previous estimate of ₹1.34 crore in 2023, suggesting a rising expectation for retirement savings over the last three years.

Despite this increase, the report suggests that this amount may still be insufficient for achieving financial security in retirement, as it is generally less than ten times the average annual household income or expenditure.

Rising NPS Preference Index

Interest in the NPS has notably increased, with the Preference Index score climbing from 54 in 2023 to 57 in 2026. This index gauges public awareness and willingness to engage with the NPS. The consideration score, which reflects the likelihood of individuals contemplating the NPS, has also risen by 6 points to 59. Awareness levels have reached 58, while the appeal score stands at 56.

Motivations Behind NPS Investment

The survey highlights that recent modifications to the NPS are a significant motivator for investment, with around 39% of participants citing this as their reason for choosing the scheme. Additionally, tax benefits (38%) and the anticipation of higher returns (36%) are also compelling factors.

Conversely, some barriers remain. Approximately 26% of respondents expressed concerns about the lock-in period for funds, while 25% viewed the mandatory annuity purchase as a challenge. Notably, the lack of awareness about the NPS is no longer a major obstacle.
