An Inspiring Journey


Dwitichandra Sahu's life story is a testament to resilience. Growing up in the small village of Kotapeta in Odisha's Rayagada district, he faced significant hardships, including a lack of basic resources for food and education. After losing his father at a young age, his mother worked tirelessly, washing dishes in others' homes to support his education.


Unyielding Spirit Amidst Hunger

Sahu's childhood was marked by financial struggles, often going to bed hungry. Despite these challenges, his determination to pursue education never wavered. Following his father's death, his mother took on the family responsibilities, working hard to ensure her son could continue his studies.


Balancing Studies and Newspaper Sales

Living in a remote area of Odisha with limited facilities, Sahu managed to pass his matriculation exams. However, financing further education proved to be a daunting task. To overcome this, he sold newspapers daily, using the earnings to fund his education. His primary concern was how to continue his studies amidst financial constraints.


From Journalism to Teaching

Despite numerous obstacles, Sahu remained committed to his education. He pursued a PhD in Tribal Studies and studied journalism from 1997 to 2001. After completing his government training, he became a teacher at Govt. High School in Billeshu, where he innovated teaching methods that garnered national recognition.


Innovative Teaching Without Internet Access

In an area with limited electricity and internet access, Sahu integrated ICT into his teaching. He traveled to regions with connectivity to download educational videos, which he then used in his classroom. He created educational games, launched a YouTube channel, and prepared soft-copy PDF materials, ensuring that resource scarcity did not hinder his students' learning.


Utilizing Journalism Experience in Education

Sahu leveraged his journalism background to enhance his teaching. He incorporated activities like Aama Bank, children's courts, art, puppet shows, and painting into his lessons. He promoted bilingual education using dictionaries of tribal languages and bilingual storybooks in Odia and Kovi. For teaching math, he utilized marbles and flashcards for creative learning.


Creating a Unique Learning Environment

Through 'Parimal Pathshala,' Sahu initiated 'Funday Saturday,' focusing on cleanliness and safety. He also launched the 'Pitara Teaching Box,' which created low-cost educational tools from recycled materials. Additionally, he established a cooperative store, a tribal museum, an MLE reading corner, and a craft corner in the school. His contributions to education and nation-building earned him national recognition, culminating in the 'National Award for Teachers 2024' from President Droupadi Murmu.
