Deadline Approaches for B.Ed Primary Teachers to Secure Jobs with Bridge Course

Introduction to the Bridge Course for B.Ed Teachers

In India, primary teachers holding a B.Ed degree have been given until January 31 to secure their positions. This applies to those who were appointed based on the notification issued by the NCTE on June 28, 2018. If these teachers apply for a six-month bridge course through the portal, they will have the opportunity to complete the course and retain their jobs. Currently, teachers appointed after this date are exempt from this requirement. This article will outline the rules and details regarding this course.

Course Format and Requirements

After document verification and meeting eligibility criteria, candidates will be registered and provided with study materials. The course will be conducted through an online distance learning format, including live video lectures, and candidates must maintain a 90% attendance rate. Following the course, there will be an assessment process conducted by the DIET Government Inter College, which will last for ten days.

Assessment Criteria

To successfully complete the bridge course, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 75%. This course has been developed after extensive discussions over the past year, incorporating all essential components for primary teachers.

Eligibility for the Bridge Course

This course is intended for candidates appointed as primary teachers with a B.Ed degree between the NCTE notification date of June 28, 2018, and the Supreme Court ruling on August 11, 2023. Those appointed after this date will not be subject to these regulations. It is important to note that this process is a one-time opportunity.

State Registrations for the Bridge Course

According to recent data, 69,281 in-service primary teachers have registered for the bridge course. The highest number of registrations comes from Uttar Pradesh with 34,602, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 10,872, Bihar with 8,057, Himachal Pradesh with 487, West Bengal with 6,647, and Delhi with 261 teachers.

Background of the NCTE Notification

The NCTE's notification on June 28, 2018, stated that individuals with a B.Ed degree would be considered eligible for primary teaching positions, leading to widespread appointments across the country. However, this decision was challenged by primary teachers' organizations in the Jodhpur High Court, which subsequently rejected the NCTE notification. The teachers who were appointed then appealed this decision in the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Ruling

On August 11, 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision. An appeal was made arguing for the reinstatement of appointments for B.Ed degree holders from 2018 to 2023, while also enforcing a ban on future appointments of B.Ed holders as primary teachers. The Supreme Court accepted this appeal and directed the NCTE to create a bridge course for these teachers by April 8, 2024, to ensure they are equipped with necessary educational methodologies.
