Bihar Expands MBBS Opportunities with Increased Medical College Seats

The National Medical Commission has approved an increase in MBBS seats across various medical colleges in Bihar, effective from the 2026-27 academic session. This expansion includes the addition of two new government medical colleges in Mahua and Ara, along with increased seat capacities at existing institutions like PMCH and JLNMCH. Private medical colleges are also seeing a rise in seat numbers, significantly broadening the opportunities for students aspiring to enter the medical field. This initiative aims to strengthen medical education in the state and accommodate more aspiring doctors.

Good News for NEET Aspirants in Bihar

For students preparing for the NEET exam and aspiring to study MBBS in Bihar, there is positive news. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned an increase in MBBS seats at various government and private medical institutions throughout the state. This change will be implemented starting from the academic year 2026-27, enabling a greater number of students to gain admission to medical colleges than in previous years. Additionally, two new government medical colleges are set to be established in Mahua and Ara, enhancing the landscape of medical education in Bihar and providing more opportunities for future doctors.

Increase in Seats at PMCH and JLNMCH

The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) will now offer 250 MBBS seats, an increase from the previous 200. This addition of 50 seats is a significant enhancement. Similarly, the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur has raised its seat capacity from 120 to 150. However, the NMC has mandated that these institutions rectify any faculty shortages within a 90-day timeframe.

New Medical Colleges in Mahua and Ara

Plans are underway to launch two new government medical colleges—one in Mahua (Vaishali) and another in Ara (Bhojpur). These colleges are anticipated to start classes and the admission process in the current academic session, each with a capacity of 100 MBBS seats. Additionally, efforts to increase seat numbers are being expedited at Darbhanga Medical College, SKMCH Muzaffarpur, and Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College in Gaya.

Expansion in Private Medical Colleges

The expansion of seat capacity is not limited to government institutions; private medical colleges are also seeing increases. Mahabodhi Medical College and Shyam Lal Chandrashekhar Medical College in Khagaria have both been approved for 100 seats each. The Virat Ramayan Institute of Medical Sciences has received approval for 50 seats, while Katihar Medical College will now accommodate 200 students. Furthermore, Narayan Medical College in Sasaram and Madhubani Medical College will each offer 250 seats. Mata Gujri Medical College in Kishanganj and Lord Buddha Medical College in Saharsa will each have 150 seats available for admission. This expansion will greatly enhance the medical education landscape in Bihar.
