Teachers currently working in government schools in West Bengal who have not yet cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) need to take note of a significant update. The School Education Department of West Bengal has communicated new directives to the School Service Commission (SSC) and the Primary Education Board. According to these guidelines, teachers in primary and upper primary schools with over five years of service must successfully pass the TET by the deadline set for August 31, 2028. Non-compliance with this requirement may adversely affect their job status and chances for promotion.


Who Needs to Take the TET?

This requirement is specific to certain teachers. It applies only to those currently employed who have not yet passed the TET and have more than five years of service remaining. These teachers are mandated to clear the exam by the specified date.


Exam Frequency and Opportunities

To ensure that teachers have ample chances to pass, the state plans to conduct the TET annually. There is also a possibility of holding the exam twice a year, with an interval of about six months between the two sessions. The School Education Department is currently awaiting a report from the SSC and the Primary Education Board on this initiative.


Consequences of Not Passing the TET

Teachers who do not pass the TET within the designated timeframe may face serious repercussions, including the risk of losing their jobs and being ineligible for promotions. However, this rule is applicable only to those who meet the outlined eligibility criteria.


Impact on a Large Number of Teachers

Historically, the TET was not a requirement in West Bengal, resulting in the hiring of many teachers without the necessary qualifications. It is estimated that around 100,000 teachers fall into this category. These teachers must now pass the TET by the deadline established by the Supreme Court.


Special TET Regulations in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, teachers in council schools who have already cleared the TET are exempt from taking the 'Special TET.' This exam is designed for those who have not yet passed the TET or CTET. The Basic Education Department has provided guidelines for registration and participation in this examination.
