The Uttarakhand government has announced a significant raise in the monthly stipend for MBBS interns, increasing it from ₹17,000 to ₹25,000. This adjustment provides an additional ₹8,000 each month for the interns.


This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aimed at supporting medical interns at the state's five government medical colleges.


Details of the Stipend Increase

The new stipend of ₹25,000 per month represents a direct increase of ₹8,000 from the previous amount. This financial support is crucial as MBBS internships are essential for students, providing them with hands-on clinical training and practical experience in medical settings.

Response to Interns' Requests

MBBS interns in Uttarakhand had previously requested a stipend increase to ₹30,000, while postgraduate resident doctors sought ₹1 lakh per month. Although the cabinet approved the increase for MBBS interns, no decision has been made regarding the stipend for PG interns yet. This move follows appeals from medical interns who highlighted the stipend rates in other states.


Cabinet Meeting Outcomes

According to Banshidhar Tiwari, the State Director General of Information, the cabinet's decision to raise the stipend was part of a broader agenda that also included the approval of the Sports Policy 2021. This policy aims to provide 'out-of-turn' employment opportunities for athletes who excel in national and international competitions, with 243 posts approved across various departments.
