Uttar Pradesh to Mandate TET for LT Grade Assistant Teacher Recruitment

The Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Department is set to implement significant changes in the recruitment of LT Grade Assistant Teachers by making the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory. This proposal aims to align educational qualifications with NCTE standards, addressing current ambiguities in the recruitment process. With the urgency heightened by a recent High Court directive, candidates should stay informed about the upcoming amendments and recruitment advertisements from the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. This move is expected to clarify eligibility criteria and enhance the quality of teaching in government secondary schools.

Changes in Recruitment Process for LT Grade Assistant Teachers

Candidates aspiring to become LT Grade Assistant Teachers in Uttar Pradesh's government secondary schools may soon face significant modifications in the recruitment process. The Secondary Education Department is proposing to make the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) a compulsory requirement for the upcoming recruitment cycle. A proposal to amend the 'Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Education (Trained Graduate Category) Service Rules, 2024' has been submitted to the government, aiming to align teacher qualifications with the standards set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). This initiative seeks to clarify the eligibility criteria and qualifications for recruitment.

Mandatory TET Qualification Proposal

The Secondary Education Department is actively working to establish TET as a necessary qualification for LT Grade Assistant Teacher recruitment. On September 14, 2026, Pratap Singh Baghel, the Director of Secondary Education, reached out to the government to reconsider the service rules. This followed directives issued during a meeting led by the Additional Chief Secretary on September 7. The department has since drafted a proposal to amend the rules regarding educational qualifications for teachers, pending government approval.

Educational Qualifications Aligned with NCTE Standards

Adherence to the educational qualifications set by the NCTE (as of November 12, 2014) for teachers of classes 6 to 10 is now essential. These qualifications include obtaining a graduation degree with a minimum of 50% marks (or 45% when combined with a postgraduate degree) and a B.Ed. from an accredited institution. The proposal aims to clarify recruitment rules in accordance with these standards, addressing any uncertainties regarding candidates' educational backgrounds.

Current Rules and Their Limitations

Although the existing service rules mention the B.Ed. qualification, they do not specify the minimum marks required for graduation and post-graduation. This gap has prompted the need for regulatory amendments. The proposal also seeks to clarify the recruitment provisions for teachers instructing classes 6 through 10.

Increased Urgency Following High Court Directive

Petitions regarding TET and educational qualifications for LT Grade recruitment have been filed in the Allahabad High Court. The court has instructed that the recruitment advertisement for teachers of classes 9 and 10 be clarified. Furthermore, the necessity to amend the regulations to make TET a mandatory qualification has been emphasized. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) oversees the recruitment of LT Grade Assistant Teachers. Therefore, candidates preparing for this recruitment should closely monitor for official approval of the amendments and the subsequent advertisement from the Commission.
