Uttar Pradesh Offers 20% Job Reservation for Agniveers as Central Government Considers Service Extension
Central Government's Proposal for Agniveer Service Extension
The Central Government is evaluating a proposal to prolong the service duration of Agniveers from four years to six years. Concurrently, the Uttar Pradesh government has declared a 20% reservation in state government positions for former Agniveers who have fulfilled their service obligations.
Significant Developments for Agniveers
Both the central and state governments are making pivotal decisions regarding Agniveers enlisted under the 'Agnipath' initiative. While the Centre is contemplating an extension of their service from four to six years, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced that former Agniveers will benefit from a 20% reservation in state jobs, along with direct recruitment without the necessity of an examination. These announcements are deemed crucial for those completing their service.
Details on the Proposed Service Extension
The initial four-year term for the first cohort of Agniveers, introduced in 2022, is approaching its conclusion. The Indian Navy's first batch will finish their service on November 21, followed by the Indian Air Force on December 21, and the Indian Army on December 31, 2026. Reports indicate that the Central Government is planning to extend the service period for Agniveers to six years, with a final decision anticipated before November 21. Discussions regarding retaining a higher percentage of Agniveers than the original 25% limit have been ongoing for several months, and the proposal is currently under review by senior officials.
Potential Impact on Agniveers
While the government is preparing to extend the service duration for Agniveers, the specific number of personnel across the three armed forces who may receive this extension remains undetermined. This extension would be in addition to the existing provision to retain 25% of personnel. Agniveers will have the choice to either continue their service or opt out, receiving a tax-free 'Seva Nidhi' package of Rs 11.71 lakh. If approved, the armed forces could feature three categories of personnel: Agniveers in their initial four-year term, those with an extended tenure, and permanent soldiers in the regular cadre.
Uttar Pradesh's Commitment to Agniveers
In a related development, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a significant initiative for the state's youth during the inauguration of development projects worth Rs 520 crore in Gonda's Gaura assembly constituency. He confirmed a 20% reservation for Agniveers returning after four years of military service in various police and security departments under the Uttar Pradesh government. Additionally, Agniveers will be exempt from written or physical examinations for state jobs and will receive appointment letters directly. This announcement follows the UP Cabinet's approval on October 9 to amend recruitment rules for police, forest, prison, and transport departments, which includes a 20% reservation for Agniveers, a relaxation of up to three years in the upper age limit, and exemption from recruitment exams.
