Uttar Pradesh Government Doubles Internship Stipend for AYUSH Students
Increased Financial Support for AYUSH Interns
The government of Uttar Pradesh has announced a significant increase in the monthly stipend for interns enrolled in government Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy medical institutions. Students pursuing BAMS, BHMS, and BUMS courses will now receive ₹15,000 per month, up from the previous amount of ₹7,500. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aimed at providing financial assistance to students engaged in practical training at hospitals and medical facilities as part of their mandatory internships.
Beneficiaries of the New Stipend
Approximately 1,714 interns from government AYUSH medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh will benefit from this stipend increase. This group includes 588 interns in Ayurveda, 150 in Unani medicine, and 976 in Homeopathy. These students are required to complete a rotating internship following their course examinations. BAMS (Ayurveda), BUMS (Unani), and BHMS (Homeopathy) are recognized medical degree programs. To qualify for the stipend, students must meet the eligibility criteria and adhere to the internship regulations set by their institutions and the government.
Internship Responsibilities
During their mandatory internships, students will collaborate with healthcare professionals in government Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy colleges and hospitals. Their responsibilities will include assisting with patient care and treatment. Interns may also be assigned tasks in hospital wards, Outpatient Departments (OPD), and during night shifts. This hands-on training aims to enhance their practical experience in the healthcare system, complementing their theoretical studies. The increased stipend will provide essential financial support throughout this training period.
Growth of Medical Education in Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the growth of healthcare services and medical education within the state. Data indicates that the number of medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh has surged from 36 in 2017 to 85 currently. Concurrently, MBBS seats have expanded from 4,690 to over 13,600. This growth in medical institutions has created more educational opportunities for students while ensuring that medical services are accessible in local communities. The government considers the expansion of medical education vital for enhancing healthcare services.
Impact of the Ayushman Scheme
According to the Chief Minister, over 10 crore residents in the state are benefiting from health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Abhiyan. These initiatives aim to alleviate the financial burden on eligible families facing serious health issues. The government's efforts to increase the number of medical colleges, expand MBBS seats, and raise the internship stipend for AYUSH students are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the health sector. However, the actual benefits of these schemes depend on meeting eligibility criteria and applicable regulations. Students are encouraged to consult their institutions or relevant government orders for detailed information regarding the stipend.
