UPSC Implements Innovative Face Authentication System for Civil Services Exam 2026
Introduction of Face Authentication System
New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has successfully integrated a newly launched face authentication system during the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026. A total of 2,072 candidates were verified in real-time at examination centers. This initiative aims to combat fraud and ensure that the candidate's photograph matches the one submitted during the application process.
Details of the Face Authentication System
The newly introduced face authentication system is utilized through an Android-based mobile application developed by UPSC, with technical support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Enhancing Examination Integrity
This facial recognition technology enhances the integrity of the examination by preventing fraud. It ensures that only registered candidates can participate, maintaining fairness throughout the process. This technological advancement streamlines the verification process, reduces waiting times, and improves the overall experience for candidates. Furthermore, it sets a precedent for future examinations, potentially leading to the widespread adoption of biometric technologies in public assessments.
Differences from Previous Systems
Developed using artificial intelligence, the new system is designed to minimize errors. According to a statement from the commission, this system will be employed during candidates' entry into the examination hall, where they will undergo facial recognition.
UPSC also noted that the authentication process takes approximately six to eight seconds per candidate, allowing for verification without delays or long queues at examination centers. During peak times, over 7,000 supervisors were assisted in using the application, processing around 12,000 authentications per minute.
Key Features of the Application
One of the most significant features of this application is that it does not require any specialized hardware and operates seamlessly on standard Android smartphones. This allows investigators to use their own mobile devices instead of needing dedicated equipment for the application. The detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) prepared by UPSC has been shared with all states, districts, and examination centers where the tests are being conducted.
