Union Cabinet Approves ₹1,500 Crore for Biomedical Research Fellowship Program

Exciting Developments in Biomedical Research
Great news has emerged for professionals, students, and youth interested in the biomedical research field. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for Phase 3 of the Biomedical Research Career Program (BRCP), which includes a substantial fellowship fund of ₹1,500 crore.
Let's delve into the details of the BRCP, including its inception, the types of research scholarships it offers, and more.
Understanding the BRC Program
The Biomedical Research Career Program is a collaborative initiative between the Department of Biotechnology in India and the Wellcome Trust India Alliance from the UK. Its main goal is to foster innovative research in biotechnology and support professionals, particularly scientists. This fellowship is available at the postdoctoral level, and final-year PhD candidates are eligible to apply, with no age restrictions.
History of the Program
Initiated in 2008-09, the Biomedical Research Career Program began with the approval of the Union Cabinet. Since then, it has facilitated the awarding of research fellowships in India that meet international standards. The second phase commenced in 2018/19.
Goals of the Third Phase
The third phase of the Biomedical Research Career Program aims to enhance skills and innovation, aligning with India's vision for development. The Cabinet has sanctioned this initiative, which seeks to attract top scientific talent in biomedical research, promote interdisciplinary studies, build global research capacity, and address regional disparities in scientific expertise.
As per the information from the PIB, this phase will offer fellowships to early-career scientists and those engaged in intermediate research across basic, clinical, and public health domains. It will also support collaborative research efforts and implement research management programs, both nationally and internationally. The objective is to train over 2,000 students and postdoctoral fellows.
Fellowship Details
The third phase of the Biomedical Research Career Program will allocate fellowships totaling ₹1,500 crore. These funds will be distributed from 2025-26 to 2030-31, and again from 2031-32 to 2037-38. The Department of Biotechnology will contribute ₹1,000 crore, while the UK and SPV, India Alliance, will provide ₹500 crore. Candidates can receive fellowships of up to ₹1 million until the conclusion of Phase 2.
