Strengthening Women's Safety in Educational Institutions

In a bid to enhance women's safety across universities and colleges, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced new guidelines aimed at ensuring adherence to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act of 2013. The UGC has reiterated that educational institutions bear a legal obligation to prevent and manage incidents of sexual harassment in the workplace. This includes the establishment of an internal complaints committee, conducting awareness initiatives, formulating clear policies, and ensuring prompt action on grievances. The overarching goal is to foster a secure, respectful, and sensitive campus environment, thereby boosting the confidence of both students and staff.

UGC's Enhanced Enforcement of the POSH Act

The UGC has mandated that all universities and higher education institutions strictly adhere to the POSH Act 2013. The Commission has made it clear that any form of negligence will be treated seriously. Institutions are required to form an Internal Committee (IC) that consists of trained members to address any complaints that arise on campus, ensuring that actions are taken within the designated timeframe.

Mandatory Awareness Programs and Clear Policies

Additionally, the UGC has stipulated that all institutions must conduct regular training and awareness sessions for students, faculty, and staff to educate them about their rights, the grievance process, and preventive measures. Institutions are also required to disseminate their POSH policies widely through websites, notice boards, and handbooks to guarantee that everyone has access to accurate information.

Emphasis on Transparent Complaint Processing

The Commission has stressed the importance of handling all complaints under the POSH Act in a timely and transparent manner. Institutions must create mechanisms that allow victims to feel safe while voicing their concerns. The UGC asserts that fostering a safe and respectful environment is not only a legal duty but also a moral obligation for educational institutions.
