The Dual Life of Modern Indian Women: Balancing Career and Home Responsibilities
The Reality of Women's Dual Responsibilities
Contemporary Indian women are excelling in education and careers, often surpassing men in various fields. However, upon returning home, they find themselves burdened with traditional responsibilities. A recent government report titled 'Women and Men in India 2025' sheds light on this dual existence.
According to the report, Indian women dedicate an average of 289 minutes (approximately 5 hours) daily to household chores, while men contribute only 88 minutes (less than one and a half hours). This indicates that women spend three times more time managing home affairs. Even after achieving managerial positions at work, women primarily handle cooking, childcare, and household duties.
Women Leading in Education
One of the most encouraging findings from the report pertains to education. The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) for women in higher education has reached 30.2, surpassing men's 28.9. At every level of schooling, the enrollment numbers for boys and girls are now nearly equal, with daughters outpacing sons in obtaining degrees.
Significant Career Growth
Women have also made remarkable strides in managerial roles, with a 102.54% increase in the number of women occupying such positions. This indicates that women are not just participating in the workforce but are also making critical decisions in high-level roles.
Improvement in Gender Ratio
Societal attitudes are shifting, as evidenced by improvements in the gender ratio. The sex ratio at birth has increased from 904 in 2017-19 to 917 in 2021-23. Additionally, women's status in health and education has also seen enhancements.
The Truth of Dual Lives
The report clearly indicates that while women are achieving parity or even excelling in the workplace, inequality persists at home. The daily routine of preparing for work, managing tasks throughout the day, and then returning home to handle household responsibilities is a reality for many women. Despite increased education and economic independence, the burden of domestic chores remains unchanged. Experts suggest that men should also take equal responsibility for household duties.
Today's women are educated, empowered, and ambitious. They are becoming managers and fulfilling their dreams. However, true change will only occur when there is equality in domestic responsibilities. The report not only celebrates women's progress but also reminds us that much work remains to be done. The advancement of the nation's daughters is promising, but society and families must also support them fully.
