The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, has unveiled the 'CM-Saathi' initiative aimed at offering high-quality coaching for students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams.

Support for Economically Disadvantaged Students

On Teachers' Day, the Chief Minister announced this significant initiative, which is specifically designed to assist economically disadvantaged students in Sikkim who are preparing for JEE and NEET. The scheme will provide free coaching to those who cannot afford the costs associated with these competitive exams.

Collaboration with IIT Kanpur

The 'CM-Saathi' scheme will be implemented in partnership with IIT Kanpur. This initiative will offer a two-month crash course for JEE and NEET aspirants from underprivileged backgrounds. The proposal has received approval from the state cabinet, with the Chief Minister emphasizing the need to support students facing financial barriers to success in these exams.

Financial Aid for Central Government Exam Preparation

In addition to educational initiatives, the Sikkim government has introduced the 'Launch Pad' scheme, which provides one-time financial assistance of up to ₹10,000 for economically weaker students, individuals with disabilities, and orphans. This funding can be utilized for study materials, travel, and other exam-related expenses.

Investment in Education

Chief Minister Tamang has expressed that education is viewed as a vital investment rather than merely an expense. For the fiscal year 2025-26, around 15% of the state's total budget has been allocated to education. The government is committed to transforming Sikkim into a center of educational excellence.

Vision for Sikkim as an Education Hub by 2035

The Chief Minister has set a goal for Sikkim to become a leading education hub by 2035, ensuring that students will not need to leave the state for quality education. Instead, the aim is to attract students from other regions to Sikkim for superior and inclusive educational opportunities. Efforts are underway to enhance the education system, including the recruitment of teachers and the introduction of the 'Sikkim Life Skills Curriculum,' which will cover essential skills such as CPR, first aid, fire safety, and disaster management.
