Significant Updates to the Agnipath Scheme for Agniveers
Major Changes to the Agnipath Scheme
The government has announced pivotal changes to the Agnipath scheme, which affects thousands of youths enlisted in the armed forces as 'Agniveers.' The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has elaborated on these modifications. Notably, 75 percent of Agniveers, who were initially scheduled to exit the service, will now receive a two-year extension, allowing them to serve for a total of six years. This extension aims to facilitate their transition into permanent roles within the armed forces.
Understanding the Agnipath Scheme
Launched by the Government of India in June 2022, the Agnipath scheme recruits youths into the armed forces as 'Agniveers.' The initial framework indicated that after four years, only 25 percent of these recruits would be retained, while the remaining 75 percent would be required to leave without any pension benefits.
Impact on Agniveers Set to Depart
As the four-year mark approaches for the first batch of Agniveers, around 18,000 personnel were expected to exit the service. However, the Union Cabinet's recent decision to grant a two-year extension means that no Agniveer will lose their position at this time.
Future Opportunities for Agniveers
After the two-year extension, most Agniveers will have the opportunity to secure permanent positions. The armed forces have committed to reviewing the performance of all 75 percent of these Agniveers, providing them a chance to retain their roles based on their track record and other relevant criteria.
Criteria for Discharge
A question arises regarding which Agniveers may have to leave after their six-year tenure. The Army has clarified that only those with poor performance, disciplinary issues, or medical unfitness will be discharged.
Benefits for Agniveers
Agniveers exiting under this scheme are entitled to various benefits, including a 'Seva Nidhi' (service fund) amounting to approximately ₹11.71 lakh, which could exceed ₹15 lakh after six years. Additionally, they will receive a 50 percent reservation in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the Assam Rifles, with several states also providing reservations at their levels.
