Recent data from UDISE+ indicates a notable decrease of around 10,000 government primary schools in India from the academic years 2024-25 to 2025-26.


Details of the Decline

The Lok Sabha has released information regarding the number of government schools in the country. According to UDISE+ statistics, the total count of government primary schools fell from 889,806 in 2024-25 to 879,940 in 2025-26, marking a reduction of 9,866 schools. This represents a decline of approximately 1.1 percent within a single year. DMK MP T.R. Baalu raised concerns about the closures due to low student enrollment and inquired about government measures to address dropout rates. However, the Ministry of Education did not specify how many schools closed due to insufficient student numbers.


Decline in School Numbers


State-wise Analysis of School Reductions

Meghalaya experienced the most significant drop in government primary schools, with numbers decreasing from 7,633 in 2024-25 to 5,459 in 2025-26, a loss of 2,174 schools. Following closely, Telangana saw a reduction from 22,983 to 21,022 schools, a decrease of 1,961. Andhra Pradesh also reported a decline of 1,446 schools, dropping from 37,449 to 36,003.


Other States with Notable Reductions

Several other states also reported declines in government primary schools:


1. Madhya Pradesh: Decrease of 1,043 schools.


2. Karnataka: Reduction of 615 schools.


3. West Bengal: Loss of 587 schools.


4. Rajasthan: Decrease of 473 schools.


5. Maharashtra: Reduction of 357 schools.


6. Himachal Pradesh: Drop of 259 schools.


7. Assam: Decrease of 209 schools.


8. Uttar Pradesh: Slight decline from 134,115 to 133,948 schools.


States with Increased School Numbers

Conversely, not all states faced a decline. Bihar saw an increase in government primary schools from 66,803 in 2024-25 to 66,915 in 2025-26, an addition of 112 schools. Similarly, Chhattisgarh's count rose from 43,836 to 43,853. No changes were reported in Jammu & Kashmir, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
