Teachers in Odisha Pause Protests After Government Promises


Bhubaneswar: Teachers from schools and colleges in Odisha have decided to suspend their protests until September 22, following assurances from the state government regarding their demands. This announcement was made by the convener of the protesting forum after a meeting with government officials.


The educators have been demonstrating since August 15, advocating for an eight-point agenda that includes demands for grant-in-aid and the filling of vacant positions in educational institutions, as well as pensions for teachers under the block grant system.


The decision to pause the protests was reached during an urgent meeting of the Odisha School College Teachers’ and Employees Coordination Committee (OSCTECC). This meeting was prompted by statements from Law Minister Prithiuviraj Harichandan and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who indicated that the government would consider the teachers' requests seriously.


Ranjan Kumar Dash, the OSCTECC convener, expressed optimism, stating, "Since Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi dispatched two ministers to meet us and assured that our demands would be reviewed, we have decided to halt the protests until September 22."


He added, "We trust that the government will address the long-standing neglect faced by teachers, who have been without social security for over two decades."


However, the forum cautioned that if their demands are not met within two weeks, they will resume their protests on September 22, coinciding with the start of the Assembly's monsoon session.


After engaging with the protesting teachers, Law Minister Harichandan remarked, "It pains us to see teachers enduring hardships for the past 20 days. A report from the high-level committee regarding teachers' issues is currently under review by the government."


Higher Education Minister Suraj urged the teachers to end their protests and return to their duties, assuring them of the government's commitment to addressing their concerns.
