NExT Exam Update



NExT Exam Announcement: A significant update has emerged for MBBS students. In a recent interview, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, the Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC), confirmed that the National Exit Test (NExT), which was previously required for obtaining a medical license and for postgraduate admissions post-MBBS, will not be enforced for the next three to four years.


This decision followed discussions held in New Delhi between Dr. Sheth and representatives from the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA).


Understanding the NExT Exam:


The NExT (National Exit Test) is intended to be a nationwide examination introduced by the NMC. Its goal is to standardize medical education and the qualifications of doctors throughout India.


Passing this exam would allow MBBS graduates to have their medical degrees recognized and gain admission to MD/MS (postgraduate) programs.


Additionally, it will act as the eligibility assessment for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) wishing to practice in India. Essentially, this single exam will fulfill three roles: licensing, postgraduate admissions, and a uniform evaluation.


Originally slated for implementation in August 2025, the exam's timeline has been delayed due to various legal, structural, and logistical issues.


The NMC had first announced the NExT exam for the 2019 batch in 2023. However, following student protests citing violations of the NMC Act 2019, the exam was postponed indefinitely.
