Overview of PG Medical Admissions 2025-26
PG Medical Admission 2025-26: In light of the growing competition for postgraduate medical placements in India, there is encouraging news for aspiring medical students. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made a pivotal decision to expand options for candidates seeking PG admissions this year. The commission has sanctioned an increase of 171 PG seats across various medical colleges nationwide and has directed counseling authorities to incorporate these seats without delay.
Details of the New PG Seats
171 New PG Seats Approved
As per the NMC, these newly approved seats span several critical medical specialties. The subjects include General Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Respiratory Medicine, and Pathology. This expansion will provide students with a broader selection of their desired fields.
States Benefiting from Additional Seats
Colleges in Several States Benefit
These additional PG seats have been distributed among medical colleges in various states, such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana. The approval of these seats was made possible through an appeal process where colleges contested earlier decisions.
Counseling Process Clarification
No Need to Wait for LoP for Counseling
The NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) issued a notice on December 31, 2025, stating that the PG seats sanctioned by the First Appeal Committee for the 2025-26 academic year will be fully eligible for counseling. Counseling authorities will not need to await separate Letters of Permission (LoP) from the colleges for these seats.
Approval Process for Additional Seats
Seats Granted After Appeal
Previously, certain medical colleges had filed appeals against earlier MARB decisions under the NMC Act 2019. These appeals were reviewed during the First Appeal Committee meetings on December 22 and 23, leading to the approval of additional seats. The list published on the NMC website will be deemed valid for counseling purposes.
The commission has also emphasized that only the list of seats available on the NMC website will be recognized as valid documentation for counseling, ensuring that no eligible PG seats remain unfilled due to administrative delays. Formal Letters of Permission (LoPs) will be issued shortly.
Impact on PG Students
PG students to benefit directly.
NMC officials indicate that this decision is designed to maximize the utilization of PG seats while ensuring regulatory oversight through the appeal process. State medical education departments and counseling bodies have been instructed to act on this decision immediately. Given the fierce competition for PG medical placements, this initiative opens new avenues for countless medical aspirants.
