Introduction of Enabling Units in Medical Colleges



A pivotal move has been initiated to enhance educational accessibility for students with disabilities in medical institutions nationwide. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated that all medical colleges and affiliated institutions create an "Enabling Unit." This unit will act as a central resource to tackle challenges faced by disabled students, offering essential educational, clinical, and other support services. The goal is to provide these students with equitable opportunities in medical training, ensuring a discrimination-free environment.


Establishment of Enabling Units

The NMC has ordered the formation of Enabling Units within every medical college to assist students with disabilities. This initiative aligns with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and recent Supreme Court directives. The unit will serve as a point of contact for students to address academic, clinical training, internship, and facility-related concerns.


The Enabling Unit's primary focus is to deliver suitable academic support, clinical help, and to foster a campus environment that is free from barriers. It will ensure that students with disabilities receive timely and tailored facilities according to their unique requirements.


Promoting Equal Opportunities

The NMC has instructed medical colleges to prominently feature information about the Enabling Unit on their websites and notice boards. Additionally, colleges must collaborate with disability assessment boards, faculty, and hospital management. They are required to keep records of all requests and the services provided while maintaining student confidentiality. The Commission has emphasized that this system should be fully operational, accessible, and effective, thereby promoting equal opportunities and an inclusive atmosphere for students with disabilities in medical education.
