New Initiative to Establish Girls' Hostels Across India
Government's Plan for Girls' Hostels
The central government is launching a new initiative aimed at constructing girls' hostels in every district nationwide. This initiative is set to significantly benefit female students from rural, remote, and underprivileged areas.

Significant Move by the Ministry of Education
The Union Ministry of Education has drafted a proposal for this initiative and plans to submit it to the Ministry of Finance. An official announcement regarding this scheme is anticipated during the general budget presentation in 2026. If approved, new girls' hostels will be established in around 700 to 800 districts across the country. These facilities will be distinct from general women's hostels, ensuring that they cater specifically to the needs of college-going girls.
Crucial Meeting with State Officials
A key meeting involving the Chief Secretaries of all states is scheduled to take place in Delhi from December 26 to 28 to deliberate on this initiative. The meeting will address various critical issues concerning higher education, particularly strategies to enhance the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50 percent and to minimize female student dropouts.
States have been encouraged to present their own strategies for promoting higher education, which may include proposals for conducting classes in two shifts, establishing new colleges, and advancing online education.
Boosting Female Participation in STEM Fields
The Ministry of Education recognizes that many talented female students in rural regions are unable to pursue science and engineering courses due to accommodation shortages. The establishment of girls' hostels is expected to significantly alleviate this issue. With safe housing near their educational institutions, female students will be empowered to engage in demanding yet rewarding subjects like STEM without concerns.
Additionally, the government is focused on increasing the availability of STEM courses and motivating female students to explore these disciplines.
Focus on Reducing Dropout Rates
The upcoming meeting will also tackle strategies to curb dropout rates stemming from economic, social, and infrastructural challenges. Hostel facilities will be particularly advantageous for female students whose families may be reluctant to allow them to study away from home. Under the National Education Policy 2020, the government aims to elevate female enrollment in higher education to 50 percent by 2035, up from the current rate of approximately 29 percent. The establishment of girls' hostels is deemed essential in closing this gap.
