New Guidelines for MBBS Admissions: Reservations for Mentally Disabled Individuals

MBBS Admission Updates
MBBS Admission: Individuals with mental disabilities will now benefit from reservation policies in MBBS admissions, as outlined by the National Medical Commission (NMC). However, the current lack of adequate standards for evaluating mental disabilities has been noted. Experts from the Commission have indicated that these guidelines will be put into practice after a thorough examination of international standards.
At present, the proposed reservations for disabled individuals encompass five distinct categories. According to existing regulations, a total of five percent reservation is available for candidates with disabilities, which includes individuals from all categories such as SC, ST, OBC, and EWS.
Establishing Standards for Mental Disabilities
There is a recognized need for reservations concerning behavioral disabilities. While these will be made available, the absence of assessment standards poses a challenge. Consequently, experts will be tasked with establishing these standards before implementation. The NMC has tentatively agreed to permit individuals with mental behavioral disabilities to enroll in medical schools. The fifth category includes those with multiple disabilities, who will also receive reservation benefits.
Reservation for Disabilities Below 80%
The interim guidelines stipulate that disabled candidates will be eligible for MBBS admissions starting from the 2025-26 academic year. Reservations will be applicable for medical admissions across various categories, including physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as those resulting from neurological and blood disorders, for individuals with disabilities ranging from 40% to less than 80%. However, specific conditions related to medical education, such as the ability to move fingers and visual capabilities, will still apply.
