Expansion of MBBS Seats at Motilal Nehru Medical College
Preparations are in progress to enhance the MBBS seat capacity at Motilal Nehru Medical College located in Prayagraj. The objective is to boost the current intake from 200 to 250 seats. To support this initiative, the government has reached out to the college administration for details regarding available resources, faculty, library facilities, hostels, mess services, and other essential amenities. This increase in seats is expected to provide more opportunities for students pursuing medical education.
Increase in MBBS Seats to 250
SRN Hospital, which is affiliated with Motilal Nehru Medical College, is also undergoing significant expansion. In response to the growing patient numbers, plans are being made to add 50 more MBBS seats at the college. The government has requested the necessary information for this purpose, and the college administration is currently gathering data on available resources and facilities.
At present, the college accommodates 200 MBBS seats. If the proposal receives approval, this number could rise to 250, thereby increasing admission opportunities for aspiring medical students.
History of Motilal Nehru Medical College
Established in 1961, Motilal Nehru Medical College initially offered 50 MBBS seats. The capacity was increased to 100 in 1967, then to 150 in 2013, and finally to 200 in 2019. Now, after nearly seven years, the college is preparing for another increase in seat count. The annual fee for the MBBS program is approximately between 35,000 to 38,000 rupees, making it an affordable choice for students seeking medical education.
Increasing Patient Numbers at SRN Hospital
SRN Hospital sees around 700,000 patients visiting the OPD each year, with approximately 65,000 to 68,000 patients being admitted annually. Over the last four years, the OPD visits have surged by about 80,000 each year.
Hospital Expansion Plans
In response to the rising patient numbers, plans are underway to establish a 100-bed critical care center and a 200-bed children's hospital. Additional projects include a Level-1 trauma center, a multi-story parking facility, and a centralized diagnostic services hub. Land acquisition for these developments is complete, and the demolition of old residential quarters is currently in progress. Future expansions will extend the hospital up to Mahatma Gandhi Marg.
