New Delhi: Imagine being sound asleep when an email about layoffs arrives at 4 AM. This is the reality for many at Meta, one of the largest tech firms globally. The company has initiated another round of significant layoffs, sending shockwaves through its workforce. Reports indicate that approximately 8,000 employees are at risk of losing their jobs, raising fresh concerns within the tech sector.


This decision comes as Meta plans to invest billions in artificial intelligence (AI). The company is shifting its focus towards creating smaller, more agile teams, leading to substantial changes across various departments.


Early Morning Emails Cause Distress

According to a report from a news media outlet, Meta sent emails to affected employees at its Singapore office at 4 AM local time (1:30 AM IST). This occurred as the company, under Mark Zuckerberg's leadership, prepares to invest heavily in AI this year. Before the layoffs and transfers, Meta employed around 78,000 individuals worldwide.

30,000 Jobs Cut by Oracle


For context, another major tech company, Oracle, recently laid off about 30,000 employees, notifying some via email at 6 AM. Previous reports suggest that Meta will notify affected employees in phases based on their time zones. Notably, the company has instructed its staff in the US, UK, and other regions to work from home today.


Details on Job Cuts

8,000 Job Reductions Planned


Meta's Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale, stated in an internal memo that in addition to the 8,000 job cuts, around 7,000 employees will be reassigned to new AI-focused teams. Gale also indicated that the company plans to reduce managerial positions and concentrate on smaller teams. It is anticipated that engineering and product teams will be particularly affected, with potential additional layoffs by year-end.

As part of its organizational restructuring, Meta has also closed approximately 6,000 job openings. Janelle noted, 'We have reached a point where many organizations can operate with a simpler structure of smaller groups that can move quickly and take on more responsibility.
