Meghalaya Board Postpones Class 12 Exams Amid Local Clashes

The Meghalaya Board has postponed two Class 12 examinations in West Garo Hills due to clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups over local council elections. The exams, originally scheduled for March 11 and 12, will be rescheduled for a later date. While the remaining districts will continue with their exams as planned, the decision was made to ensure the safety of students amid curfews and security concerns following violent incidents. Examinations Delayed in West Garo Hills

In Meghalaya, the Board of Education has announced the postponement of two Class 12 examinations in the West Garo Hills district due to recent clashes between tribal and non-tribal communities regarding local council election nominations, according to an official statement.

The Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) exams, originally set for March 11 and 12, will be rescheduled for a later date.

Other Districts Unaffected
Examinations in other districts of Meghalaya will proceed as planned.

TR Lalu, the Director of Accreditation and Controller of Examinations for the Meghalaya Board, confirmed, "The HSSLC exams for Music on March 11 and Human Science on March 12 have been cancelled only in West Garo Hills. New dates will be announced soon."

This year, over 29,000 students are registered to take the Higher Secondary School Probationary Examination conducted by the board.

Postponement Due to Security Issues
The decision to delay the exams was made in light of a curfew imposed in certain areas of the district following violent incidents. Lalu emphasized that safety measures were implemented to protect both students and examination personnel.

An additional official reported that two individuals lost their lives due to police firing during the clashes over the nomination process for local council elections on Tuesday, prompting the government to enforce a curfew and deploy military assistance.
