Mandatory Marathi Language Instruction

The Maharashtra state government has officially mandated the teaching of the Marathi language for students in grades 1 through 10 at all government and private educational institutions. This regulation applies universally, irrespective of the medium of instruction, whether it be English, Hindi, or any other language. School Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced this initiative during a session in the Legislative Assembly, stating that it is being enforced under the 'Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools in Maharashtra Act, 2020'.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Schools that do not adhere to this new requirement will initially receive a warning. Should they fail to implement Marathi instruction following this notice, they may incur a fine of up to ₹1 lakh. Continued non-compliance could lead to the revocation of the school's recognition. The government referenced an order dated April 17, 2026, indicating that this policy will be enforced rigorously.

Examinations for the Marathi Subject

Marathi will not be treated as a mere supplementary subject; regular examinations will be conducted for it across all grades from 1 to 10. This means that Marathi will hold the same importance as other core subjects in the curriculum.

Legislative Assembly Concerns

During discussions in the Legislative Assembly, opposition members raised concerns about the delay in the law's enforcement, which was passed in 2020. They inquired about the number of schools that have faced penalties thus far. Some legislators suggested increasing the fines and called for stricter measures against non-compliant institutions.

Promotion of State Anthem and Historical Figures

The government has also encouraged schools to respectfully sing the state anthem, 'Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha'. Furthermore, there are initiatives to enhance the inclusion of historical figures such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Savitribai Phule, and Mahatma Phule in the history curriculum.

Support for Maratha Community Students

In addition, the government has broadened educational support for students from the Maratha community. They will now qualify for various benefits, including scholarships, financial assistance for professional courses, and support for education outside the state. These initiatives aim to enhance educational opportunities and advancement for these students.
