Maharashtra Mandates Marathi Language in Schools from Classes 1 to 10
Mandatory Marathi Language Education
The Maharashtra government has declared that the study of the Marathi language will be compulsory for students in grades 1 through 10 across all schools. Institutions that do not comply with this directive may face severe penalties.
This new regulation aims to enhance the prominence of the Marathi language and deepen students' understanding of the state's rich culture and history. The government has issued firm instructions mandating compliance from all educational institutions, with potential repercussions for those that fail to adhere.
Government's Firm Stance
Dada Bhuse, the School Education Minister of Maharashtra, emphasized that adherence to this rule is non-negotiable for every school in the state. The government has made it clear that learning Marathi is now a requirement rather than an option. To ensure compliance, an inspection initiative will be launched statewide, and strict measures will be enforced against non-compliant schools.
Legislative Assembly Discussion
The issue was raised during a session in the Legislative Assembly, where some representatives highlighted that numerous schools were not following existing regulations effectively. In light of these concerns, the government resolved to enforce this new rule.
Inclusion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's History
In addition to language studies, the government has mandated that students will learn the comprehensive history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Textbooks will provide detailed accounts to help students appreciate the significant contributions and sacrifices made by this historical figure.
Cultural Promotion Through Education
This initiative is not limited to academic content; it aims to immerse students in the history of Marathi culture, fostering a deeper appreciation for their heritage. Concurrently, the CBSE is also working on implementing a new language policy at the national level. While current students have been given some leeway regarding the full enforcement of these regulations, further decisions may be forthcoming from the CBSE.
