New Educational Initiatives for Maratha Community

The Maharashtra government has announced a pivotal initiative aimed at supporting students from the Maratha community. These students will now have access to educational benefits and concessions that were previously designated for those in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. An official directive has been issued to all relevant departments to ensure the implementation of this initiative, which seeks to enhance educational and skill development opportunities for Maratha youth. The government has committed to allocating sufficient funds in upcoming budgets to facilitate the successful execution of these programs.

As per the new directive, Maratha students will be eligible for the post-Class 10 scholarship scheme that is currently available to OBC students in Maharashtra. Furthermore, various scholarship programs at primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels will now be accessible to Maratha students, aiding financially challenged individuals in pursuing their education.

**Emphasis on Skill Development and Training**

The government has broadened the scope of its initiatives to encompass not just education but also employment and skill development. The training scheme for motor vehicle drivers and conductors, which was previously exclusive to the OBC category, will now be available to Maratha youth as well. This program will be managed through the government's 'Sarathi' portal, enhancing employment prospects for the youth.

**Background of the Decision**

This decision follows a period of agitation concerning the Maratha reservation. Activist Manoj Jarange recently concluded his hunger strike after discussions with state government officials, during which a 12-point proposal was presented. It is believed that this significant decision, which directly benefits Maratha students, stems from those discussions.
