Overview of SSC CGL Recruitment



The Combined Graduate Level (CGL) recruitment is recognized as the premier recruitment initiative by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Each year, the SSC fills numerous positions through the CGL scheme, drawing a significant number of applicants. As a result, the competition for SSC CGL recruitment is notably intense, with many candidates dedicating years to their preparation. However, their efforts may be compromised if they do not adapt their study methods to the recent modifications in the SSC CGL format. Notably, the SSC has updated the CGL exam structure, introducing a new rule concerning sectional timing.


Previous CGL Exam Structure

In June 2026, the SSC made changes to the CGL exam format. Previously, candidates had 60 minutes to answer 100 questions in the Tier-1 exam, with a single time limit for all four subjects. For the Tier-2 exam, candidates were allotted 2 hours to complete 130 questions across two sections. Although there were specific time allocations for each section, candidates had the flexibility to approach the questions in any order they preferred, allowing them to tackle easier questions first.


Introduction of Sectional Timing

Starting from June 2026, the SSC has introduced a new exam pattern for the CGL that includes fixed sectional timing for both Tier-1 and Tier-2 exams. In Tier-1, candidates are given 15 minutes for each subject, while the Tier-2 exam specifies time limits for each section.


With this change, candidates can no longer choose the order in which they answer questions; they must adhere to the designated subject sequence. Once a candidate submits answers for a subject, they cannot return to it.


Subject-wise Question Solving Requirement

According to the updated SSC CGL pattern, candidates are mandated to solve questions in a structured manner, specifically by subject. Each subject and section has defined time limits.
