Kendriya Vidyalayas Face Principal Vacancies Amid Ongoing Recruitment Efforts

Current Status of Kendriya Vidyalayas



As reported by the Ministry of Education, there are 1,356 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) functioning throughout the nation. Out of these, 1,012 schools have appointed regular Grade-2 principals, while 344 schools are currently without permanent leadership.


Vacancy Challenges in Kendriya Vidyalayas

A significant number of principal positions remain unfilled in Kendriya Vidyalayas across India. Data presented in Parliament indicates that 344 KVs lack regular principals, which translates to nearly one in four schools operating without a permanent head. The Ministry has assured that efforts are underway to address these vacancies, and interim measures have been implemented to maintain academic continuity.


The number of vacant principal posts has increased over the years. Approximately eight years ago, there were 200 vacancies among 1,081 sanctioned posts. Although the total number of Kendriya Vidyalayas has grown, the shortage of regular principals has also escalated.


Reasons for Principal Vacancies

In response to inquiries in Parliament, the Education Minister highlighted that principal vacancies arise from various administrative factors. These include the creation of new Kendriya Vidyalayas, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, and other departmental assignments. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan adheres to established recruitment protocols to fill these positions.


Recruitment Progress Amidst Challenges

Following interruptions in the recruitment process due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan successfully filled 13,441 teaching and non-teaching roles, including principal positions, in 2022. Furthermore, in November 2025, a notification was released for the recruitment of 8,714 teaching staff, which includes 161 principal roles.


The Tier-1 and Tier-2 examinations for these roles were held in 2026. Additionally, a recruitment initiative for 2,153 positions, including 157 principal roles, commenced in December 2025 through a Limited Departmental Examination.


Maintaining Academic Standards

Despite the vacancies in principal positions, the Ministry of Education asserts that the academic standards of Kendriya Vidyalayas have not been compromised. Teaching and examination activities continue as scheduled, supported by alternative administrative arrangements and the hiring of contractual teachers when necessary.
