Indian Railways continues to be a major source of employment in India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reported to Parliament that over the last 11 years, the Railways has successfully employed more than 5 lakh individuals, and this trend is ongoing.


For the fiscal year 2024–25, a significant recruitment initiative has been launched to fill 1.2 lakh vacancies, with many categories already in the recruitment phase. This information is vital for those seeking government employment.


Recent Recruitment Notifications

7 Recruitment Notifications Issued in 2025


As stated by the Railway Minister,



  • In 2024, the Railways released 10 major recruitment notifications for 91,116 positions, with the selection process still ongoing.


  • In 2025, 7 additional notifications have been issued to fill 38,463 positions.



This brings the total recruitment target for FY 2024–25 to around 1.2 lakh vacancies.

  • Junior Engineer (JE)


  • Depot Material Superintendent (DMS)


  • Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant


  • Paramedical Categories


  • Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) for graduates & undergraduates


  • Level-1 posts such as Track Maintainer & Pointsman



These roles represent one of the largest recruitment efforts undertaken by the Railways.

  • From 2004–2014, the Railways employed 4.11 lakh individuals.


  • From 2014–2025, this figure increased to 5.08 lakh, showcasing a notable rise in job creation.



He noted that the implementation of a Railway Recruitment Calendar has enhanced transparency and predictability for job seekers.

In response to inquiries regarding contractual hiring, the Minister clarified:



  • Contractual roles are temporary.


  • These positions are established based on specific operational needs, and


  • They are terminated once the designated tasks are completed.
