IIT Kanpur to Pioneer Medical Education with MBBS and PhD Programs
IIT Kanpur's Groundbreaking Initiative
IIT Kanpur is on the verge of making a significant leap in education by becoming the first Indian Institute of Technology to introduce medical programs, including MBBS and PhD degrees, alongside its engineering curriculum.
During the institute's 67th Foundation Day celebration, Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal revealed exciting developments regarding the future of the institution. He announced that a 450-bed super-specialty hospital is set to open on campus by April 2027, paving the way for the admission of students into MBBS and PhD programs starting in the 2029 academic year.
Upcoming Super-Specialty Hospital
The construction of the super-specialty hospital, part of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, is progressing well. Although there were minor delays due to heavy rains and construction disputes, the facility is expected to be inaugurated in April 2027. Once operational, it will provide essential medical services to residents of Kanpur and surrounding districts, reducing the need for patients to travel to major cities like Delhi or Mumbai for advanced treatments.
Launch of Medical Courses
IIT Kanpur plans to initiate clinical courses in 2029. However, the institute will start offering MTech and PhD programs in non-clinical medical disciplines and medical engineering as early as the 2027 academic session.
Cybersecurity Collaboration with UP Government
In a significant partnership, IIT Kanpur has been tasked with ensuring the cybersecurity of a new data center being established by the Uttar Pradesh government in Lucknow. Prof. Manindra Agrawal mentioned that the institute has developed a sophisticated cybersecurity operation system designed to defend against various cyber threats. The data center will utilize indigenous technology for enhanced security.
Establishment of 'U-Hubs' for Startups
To foster innovation in the deep-tech sector, the Uttar Pradesh government is launching 'U-Hubs.' Two centers will be established: one at IIT Kanpur's Noida campus and another at IIIT Lucknow. These hubs are expected to open by the end of this month and will provide vital resources and support for emerging startups in the deep-tech field.
