IIT Delhi Leads the Way in Sustainability Rankings

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been recognized as the top-ranked institution in India, followed closely by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur, as per the QS World University Sustainability rankings released on Tuesday.

For the first time since the rankings began in 2023, Lund University in Sweden has claimed the top position. The University of Toronto, which held the number one spot in 2024 and 2025, has now dropped to second place, while UCL in the UK has risen two spots to secure third place.

India has made a significant mark this year with 26 new entries, making it one of only four higher education systems globally to have over 100 universities listed in the rankings.

According to QS, out of the 103 Indian universities included, 32 have improved their rankings, 15 maintained their positions, and 30 saw a decline. IIT Delhi remains the highest-performing institution in India, ranking 205th overall, with an improved score compared to the previous year.

Among the 15 IITs featured in this year's rankings, six have shown progress compared to the 2025 rankings. IIT Delhi is among these six institutions that have made notable advancements since the inaugural rankings three years ago.

Several Indian universities have achieved their best-ever scores in the 2026 rankings, with nine making it into the top 700. Notable institutions include Vellore Institute of Technology, IIT Roorkee, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Lovely Professional University, Panjab University, Banaras Hindu University, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, IIT BHU, and UPES.

Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized that Indian universities excel in knowledge exchange and environmental sustainability. The rankings highlight the critical role of higher education in combating climate change, underscoring India's contributions to sustainable development.

Turner noted that India's ambitious renewable energy targets and commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the Global South, necessitate robust research capabilities and green skills. It is essential for Indian universities to receive ongoing support to cultivate the talent and innovation needed for a sustainable future.
