IIT BHU to Introduce Innovative B.Tech Program in Physical AI by 2027-28

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU is gearing up to launch a groundbreaking four-year B.Tech program in Physical AI, set to commence in the 2027-28 academic year. This innovative program aims to equip engineering students with skills in robotics, sensor technology, and machine control, opening doors to diverse career opportunities in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and space research. With the establishment of a dedicated School of Physical AI, IIT BHU is poised to lead in this emerging field, supported by a team of educators collaborating internationally to develop a robust curriculum. Discover how this program will shape the future of engineering education.

Introduction of a New B.Tech Program

A fresh opportunity is on the horizon for engineering students interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU is set to launch a four-year B.Tech program in 'Physical AI' starting in the academic year 2027-28. The establishment of a dedicated 'School of Physical AI' at the institute has already received approval.

Curriculum Overview

The program's curriculum will encompass various subjects, including robotics, sensor technology, machine control, and practical AI applications. Graduates can expect to find career opportunities in diverse sectors such as industrial production, agriculture, healthcare, and space exploration.

Program Development Progress

Launch Timeline

Efforts are underway to implement the Physical AI program at IIT BHU. On October 17, the Senate of the institute approved the proposal for the School of Physical AI. A coordination committee, consisting of eight members and led by Director Prof. Amit Patra, has been established to manage the school's development. Prof. Rajesh Kumar will act as the Vice-Chairperson of this committee.

Faculty Recruitment Initiatives

Building an Academic Team

To support this new initiative, a team of educators is being assembled. Faculty members from IIT BHU are visiting institutions in countries such as Poland and South Korea to create a strong academic foundation in this emerging field.

Understanding Physical AI

Definition and Scope

Physical AI represents a branch of artificial intelligence that merges computer technology with tangible machines and devices. By leveraging robots, sensors, cameras, and motors, it allows machines to interpret their environment and function accordingly. Unlike traditional AI, which focuses on digital data, Physical AI aims to enhance the intelligence of machines operating in the physical realm.

Curriculum Focus Areas

Robotics and Machine Control

Expert committees are currently formulating the curriculum for the four-year B.Tech program. It will include topics such as robotics, autonomous systems, sensor technology, machine control, and practical AI applications. Students will not only engage in programming but will also gain hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing machines while addressing real-world challenges.

Career Prospects in Physical AI

Opportunities in Various Industries

Pursuing a degree in Physical AI can lead to numerous career paths in fields like robotics engineering, smart manufacturing, industrial automation, agricultural technology, healthcare, and space research. However, the availability of job opportunities will largely depend on the students' skills, expertise, and the specific needs of the industry.

Expansion of IIT BHU's Academic Offerings

Fifth School at IIT BHU

The School of Physical AI will mark the fifth academic school established at IIT BHU. The institute has previously launched schools dedicated to Biomedical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Decision Science, and Material Science. Additionally, IIT Kharagpur has announced the creation of the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, with a budget allocation of ₹35 crore.
