IISc Achieves Top Rank in India



The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has been recognized as the leading institution in India according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, achieving a global rank of 254 this year.


This prestigious institution has consistently ranked at the forefront of higher education in India. Previously categorized within the 201–250 range, IISc has now received a specific global ranking for the first time. The 2027 rankings encompass 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions. Notably, India has seen an increase in its representation, with 143 universities making the list—15 more than last year. For the second year running, India boasts the highest number of ranked universities in Asia.


Performance Metrics of IISc

IISc scored an overall 57.0 in the rankings, excelling particularly in the 'Research Environment' category with an impressive score of 98.0. The institute also achieved scores of 62.1 in 'Teaching' and 58.6 in 'Research Quality'. The rankings assess universities based on various criteria, including teaching quality, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry collaboration.


Other Indian Institutions in the Rankings

Following IISc, the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences ranked second among Indian institutions, falling within the 326–350 global band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences ranked in the 451–500 band. Additionally, Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University both secured positions in the 501-550 band. Noteworthy changes include Saveetha's rise from the 351-400 band to 326-350, and KIIT's improvement from 601-800 to 501-550. Conversely, Jamia's ranking dropped from 401-500 to 501-550.


Asia's Performance in the Rankings

A significant trend in the 2027 World University Rankings is the performance of Asian universities, which have now surpassed European institutions for the first time. This year, 1,003 universities from Asia are included in the rankings, up from 929 last year.


Moreover, 40 Asian universities are now in the global top 200, an increase of five from the previous year. Tsinghua University in China has climbed to the 11th position, making it the highest-ranked university in Asia, followed by Peking University at 13th and the National University of Singapore in the top 15. Other notable rankings include the University of Tokyo at 27th, the University of Hong Kong at 33rd, and Seoul National University in South Korea at 56th.


Global Rankings Overview

On a global scale, the University of Oxford has maintained its position at the top for the 11th consecutive year. MIT follows in second place, while Princeton University and Stanford University share the third spot. The University of Cambridge rounds out the top five.
