Tamil Nadu Rain: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially announced the arrival of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several southern districts. Over the next few days, areas may experience intense rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds.


Continuous rainfall since midnight has caused significant disruptions in southern Tamil Nadu, prompting district authorities to declare school holidays. The district collector of Tirunelveli, Sukumar, announced that all schools will remain closed on October 16 due to severe rain and flooding in the area. The local paddy fields have also been adversely affected.




School Closures in Affected Districts

Similarly, the district collectors of Thoothukudi and Tenkasi have ordered school closures due to the ongoing rainfall. Many roads and low-lying areas in Tirunelveli are submerged, and the water level of the Nambiyar River is rising rapidly due to runoff from the Western Ghats.


IMD Issues Orange Alert

The regional meteorological center in Chennai reported that monsoon activities have been very active across Tamil Nadu in recent days. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram, advising residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.




Rainfall Alerts for Various Regions

Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode. Cities like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Kanchipuram may experience intense rain, with thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h in some areas.


IMD officials indicated that conditions are favorable for the complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the rest of India in the coming days. Additionally, the arrival of the northeast monsoon has been confirmed by the presence of easterly and northeasterly winds in southern India.


Due to a cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu and another weather system over the southeastern Arabian Sea, increased rainfall activity is expected in the coming days. Experts have urged residents in vulnerable districts to stay alert, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow local government directives, as heavy rain and flooding may persist throughout the week.
