New Scheme for Girls' Education

The central government is launching a significant initiative aimed at facilitating access to higher education for girls residing in rural and remote regions. This initiative will involve the construction of girls' hostels in all 800 districts across the nation, ensuring that distance does not hinder their educational pursuits.

The Ministry of Education has forwarded the proposal to the Ministry of Finance, with expectations of an announcement in the forthcoming 2026 budget. A pivotal meeting of chief secretaries from all states is set to take place in Delhi from December 26 to 28.

This meeting will focus on strategies to elevate the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50 percent and to address dropout rates. The government is prioritizing girls' education, which is why the establishment of hostels in every district is being considered.

Key Issues for Discussion

States have been requested to share their strategies for enhancing the GER. The feasibility of implementing two shifts in college classes will also be on the agenda. Additionally, discussions will include the establishment of new colleges, the promotion of online education, and the standardization of curricula and board examination patterns nationwide.

The meeting will also seek input from states regarding skill-based education and the introduction of new subjects. The government's objective is to align educational standards with international benchmarks through improved infrastructure and modern facilities.
