Future Job Opportunities in India's Renewable Energy Sector
Growth in Renewable Energy Jobs by 2030
It is anticipated that by the year 2030, approximately one million new jobs will emerge in India's renewable energy sector. This insight comes from a study conducted by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Skill Council for Green Jobs. The primary focus of these new employment opportunities will be on small renewable energy projects, particularly rooftop solar and mini-micro grid systems. Currently, around 110,000 individuals are employed in this sector.
Role of Solar Engineers
Solar engineers specialize in the technology for generating electricity from solar energy. Their responsibilities encompass the planning, execution, and design of solar energy projects. They oversee the installation of rooftop solar panels and are also involved in the development of commercial solar energy plants and residential solar power systems.
Qualifications Required
Typically, students with a background in electrical engineering pursue careers in the solar energy sector. Additionally, those studying chemical engineering, industrial engineering, and computer engineering can also find opportunities in this field. Admission to these courses is generally through the JEE exam at prestigious institutions like NITs and IITs. Students who have completed their 12th grade in science can enroll in these programs.
Leading Institutions
Some of the prominent institutions offering courses in this field include:
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Guwahati
- Indian Institute of Solar Energy, Thane
Diverse Opportunities for All
In the solar energy sector, large companies are quick to offer jobs to project managers, engineers, sales professionals, and business development experts. Additionally, both skilled and unskilled workers can find employment in tasks such as installing, cleaning, and maintaining solar panels. Companies often provide training for these roles, and the government also runs the 'Surya Mitra Skill Development Program' to facilitate training. Furthermore, there are excellent career prospects in the field of solar cooking thermal energy.
