A Unique Career Shift


Vikramdev Mohapatra, hailing from Nabarangpur, Odisha, presents a distinct narrative compared to many young individuals who view corporate jobs as the pinnacle of their careers. He completed his BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Biju Patnaik University of Technology in 2012, subsequently entering the software industry and gaining experience in various tech firms.


A Bold Decision After 14 Years

Throughout his career, Vikramdev worked with notable companies such as Discovery Solutions, Mindtree, Serol Technologies, and LTIMindtree. He held various roles, progressing from software engineer to module lead, technical lead, and senior specialist. After accumulating extensive experience in SAP solutions, software development, product implementation, and client management, he decided to leave his corporate job after 14 years.


Returning Home to Start Mushroom Farming

Upon leaving his IT position, Vikramdev returned to Nabarangpur and launched a commercial mushroom production and processing venture named 'Ganga Bhumi Mushrooms.' This is not a small-scale operation; reports indicate that his unit produces approximately 500 to 600 kilograms of mushrooms daily, totaling around 15 to 18 tons each month.


A Profitable Business Venture


According to reports, Ganga Bhumi Mushrooms generates a monthly revenue of approximately ₹16 to ₹19 lakh. The mushrooms are sold at an average price of ₹100 to ₹110 per kilogram. After covering operational costs, the business reportedly earns over ₹10 lakh each month, although these figures have not been independently verified.


Support from the Government

The establishment of this enterprise involved a project cost of around ₹2.56 crore. Reports suggest that Vikramdev received approximately ₹97 lakh in government subsidies under the Chief Minister's Agricultural Industry Scheme. The products are distributed to markets in Brahmapur and Bhubaneswar, aiding in the year-round operation of the business.


Creating Job Opportunities

Vikramdev's transition has not only impacted his income but also created job opportunities for 24 local individuals, including 18 women and six men. This transformation illustrates how someone with a background in IT can generate employment in a completely different sector like agriculture, showcasing the versatility of technical education and corporate experience.
