India is witnessing the rapid emergence of a new sector that is creating numerous job opportunities across various fields. However, many individuals remain unaware of these prospects, which hinders their ability to apply for or even discover these roles. In light of this, we engaged in an insightful discussion with Lieutenant Colonel Monish Ahuja (Retd.), the founder of Punjab Renewable Energy Systems Pvt. Ltd. (PRESPL) and a notable figure in the bio-energy industry, during the Bioenergy Global Conference 2026 held at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka, Delhi.


He emphasized the swift growth of the bio-energy sector, which is in need of a wide array of specialists. The Indian government has initiated plans to establish 5,000 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants nationwide, with 200 already operational. This indicates a significant amount of work ahead, presenting vast opportunities for individuals in this field, yet many are deterred by a lack of information.

Lieutenant Colonel Ahuja elaborated on the rapid expansion of the bio-energy sector in India. The government is actively supporting projects related to ethanol, biogas, compressed biogas (CBG), biomass, and other clean energy initiatives, resulting in a consistent increase in job opportunities. Key positions in the bio-energy sector include bio-energy engineers, biogas plant engineers, biomass project managers, ethanol plant operators, research scientists, quality control officers, environmental engineers, production engineers, plant maintenance engineers, marketing and business development officers, sustainability consultants, and project coordinators. Candidates can apply for roles that match their expertise.


Required Qualifications


To land a job in the biogas energy sector, the primary educational requirement is a B.Tech. or B.E. degree. Relevant fields of study include Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Biotechnology, or Environmental) and B.Sc./M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or Chemistry. Additionally, possessing an ITI certificate or a Diploma (Mechanical, Electrical, or Plant Operations), or an MBA in Energy Management (for managerial roles) can significantly enhance job prospects in this industry.
