This initiative aims to enhance import-export capabilities and generate new job opportunities. The government believes that transporting goods via waterways is more efficient and cost-effective, leading to the decision to construct these waterways over the next five years.

They are often more economical, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly compared to road and rail transport. Despite India's extensive coastline and river network, the potential of waterways has not been fully realized until now. This budget proposal marks a significant advancement in promoting their utilization.

Waterways play a crucial role in trade by enabling the transport of heavy and bulk commodities like coal, iron ore, grains, cement, and petroleum products over long distances at reduced costs. As waterways expand, so do career prospects within the Merchant Navy. This sector encompasses commercial shipping services, including cargo ships, tankers, and container vessels. It offers various roles such as Deck Officer, Marine Engineer, Navigation Officer, and Electro-Technical Officer. The Merchant Navy appeals to young individuals with technical expertise and a passion for maritime work, providing opportunities for international experience.

To embark on a career in the Merchant Navy, candidates typically need a background in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) from their 12th-grade education. Those interested in deck positions must pursue navigation-related courses, while engineering roles require marine engineering studies. These programs are provided by institutions accredited by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). Additionally, medical fitness is a prerequisite.

Initially, as a cadet or trainee, one can expect a salary ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per month, which can significantly increase with experience and rank, potentially reaching several lakhs per month. With the government's emphasis on developing waterways, the Merchant Navy is poised to become a robust and stable career choice for young professionals in the years ahead.
