Delhi University Introduces Direct PhD Admission for FYUP Graduates

New PhD Admission Guidelines at Delhi University

Delhi University has revised its PhD admission policies, allowing students who have completed the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) to apply directly for the PhD program without needing a master's degree first. This change eliminates the previous requirement of obtaining a postgraduate degree, potentially saving students one to two years and enabling them to start their research careers earlier.

The primary aim of this initiative is to involve students in research activities at a younger age and to foster a culture of research within higher education. However, students must still fulfill certain criteria to qualify for direct PhD admission, which includes achieving minimum marks, passing an entrance exam, and succeeding in an interview. The university anticipates that this will open up better research opportunities for talented young individuals.

Eligibility Requirements for Direct PhD Admission

To be eligible for direct admission into the PhD program after completing a four-year undergraduate degree, students must achieve at least 75% marks or an equivalent CGPA. A relaxation of 5% is available for candidates from SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), EWS, and PwD categories, allowing them to apply with a minimum of 70% marks.

The university has confirmed that the traditional admission process remains applicable for students who have completed a three-year undergraduate program. These students must hold a master's degree with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) to qualify for PhD admission. Additionally, candidates with an M.Phil. degree and at least 55% marks are also eligible for the PhD program.

Selection Process: Entrance Exam and Interview

Simply meeting the eligibility criteria is insufficient. Students aiming for direct PhD admission must pass the UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or the university's specific entrance examination. Following this, they must also clear an interview conducted by the relevant department.
