Strengthening Healthcare Services in Bihar
In a significant move to enhance healthcare services and address the shortage of trained human resources, the Bihar government has announced the establishment of nursing and paramedical training institutes across the state. The plan includes setting up one Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) training institute in each of the nine divisions and one General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) institute in every district. Additionally, a paramedical college will be established in each district. This ambitious initiative is set to be implemented starting from the financial year 2026-27, with a target to complete the establishment of these institutions within a year to expedite the training process.
Addressing Staff Shortages
Officials have indicated that the decision comes in response to the increasing demand for healthcare services in Bihar and the shortage of nursing and paramedical staff in hospitals. The new framework aims to provide nursing and paramedical education locally in both rural and urban areas, ensuring that youth have access to training.
This initiative is expected to create job opportunities while also improving the quality of healthcare services. It will ensure the availability of trained personnel at community health centers, primary health centers, and district hospitals. Furthermore, the establishment of GNM and ANM institutes will strengthen maternal and child health services.
With the opening of paramedical colleges, the shortage of radiographers, pharmacists, lab technicians, and other technical staff will be addressed. The health department has initiated the process of identifying land and outlining the infrastructure requirements in the respective districts.
Current and Proposed Nursing Institutions in Bihar
Currently, there are 30 government GNM institutions and 140 private ones. For ANM institutions, there are 81 government and 86 private facilities. Additionally, there are 42 government and 86 private paramedical institutions.
Under the new proposal, the number of government GNM institutions will increase to 38, and the number of government paramedical institutions will also rise to 38. The number of government ANM institutions is set to be 9.
